While the men and women of police departments across America are best known for serving and protecting, they themselves are sometimes in need of protection, which is where Ford steps in with the service of its award-winning Surveillance Mode technology.
The technology, which recently won the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executive’s Award at the organization’s 38th Annual Conference and Exhibition, is now available for all automakers to purchase in order to help keep police officers and military police officers safe in their day-to-day duties.
Surveillance Mode uses camera and radar to detect when someone is approaching a police vehicle from the rear. In response, it sounds a chime within the vehicle to alert the officer, rolls up the windows, locks the doors, and flashes the exterior lights.
Surveillance Mode, developed with InterMotive Inc., was previously only available on the Ford Police Interceptor. Opening the patent for purchase means that officers in vehicles of all makes will benefit from the invention.
“We want to assist with and improve the security of all police officers – whether they are using a Ford Police Interceptor or a competitive vehicle,” said Randy Freiburger, Ford police and ambulance special vehicle engineering supervisor. “Combining existing Ford technologies with the development of a new control module and software has created an innovative system that improves security for police officers while they are in their vehicles.”
