Tips for Winter Driving: Proper Maintenance

car tire in snow - tips for winter drivingWinter is here, which means you’ll need to get used to driving in cold weather. From ice to snow, driving conditions simply get worse when the thermometer dips. That’s why it’s important to stay prepared. Read on to learn more about tips for winter driving.

To begin with, check your tires. If you haven’t already considered buying winter tires, now is the time to get them. These tires are made with special rubber compounds that stand up in cold weather. They also have thicker treads to help with slippery surfaces, and special trenches divert water to prevent hydroplaning. In cold weather, it’s also important to check tire pressure, as the psi dips when the temperature lowers.

According to Market Wire, you should also be sure to add antifreeze.

Antifreeze prevents this—usually a 50/50 blend works best. In fact, many technicians find that a blend works better in lower temperatures than pure antifreeze. In short, follow the directions.

Finally, change your oil. Cold weather usually calls for a less viscous—or less thick—oil. Plus, by the end of the year, it’s likely that you need to change your oil anyway. Opting for a thicker oil will help coat the engine and provide a better layer of lubrication, extending the life of your car.

In conclusion, check your tire pressure, add antifreeze, and be sure to change the oil. These are the best tips for winter maintenance you’ll find anywhere.

2015 F-150 Aluminum Body Reduces Weight and Cost

2015 F-150 Aluminum Body

2015 Ford F-150

If you’re like some of us at Friendly Ford, you’ve made New Year’s resolutions to start eating healthier, save more money, and maybe even recycle a bit more in 2015. If you’ve made a few of these promises to yourself, look no further than the Ford F-150 for inspiration. Recently, the F-150 switched from structure of steel to one of aluminum in the 2015 incarnation, saving weight, money, and even reducing its carbon footprint.

This change saves the company about $124 per pickup, as the Ford factory waste aluminum is returned to the aluminum manufacturer for recycling. Aluminum is more expensive than steel, but the savings in recycling leftover aluminum are making the difference. At its Dearborn and Kansas City plants, Ford has created a new recycling system that sends $300 worth of scrap metal back to its suppliers. Since aluminum is 95% recyclable, it is easier and cheaper to recycle scrap pieces instead of mining more aluminum ore.

In addition to saving money, the new 2015 F-150 aluminum body is much lighter than its steel predecessor. In all, the F-150 dropped about 700 pounds by making the switch. It takes a lot of energy to haul around that big steel frame, so going lighter with an aluminum body is going to save a lot of gas money for F-150 enthusiasts.

If the F-150 can do it, so can you. Good luck in keeping your New Year’s resolutions for 2015, and if you’d like to see how the F-150 drives with that light new body, come into Friendly Ford for a test drive.
