The Focus is a Great First Car for Teen Drivers

Teen DriversDo you have a teenage son or daughter nearing the age of 16? Yahoo Autos recently released a list of the top vehicles for the teen driver(s) in your family. The top vehicle on the list was the 2009 Ford Focus. Yahoo Autos says that the Ford Focus is great when it comes to safety, reliability and ease of use, which are all things that parents look for in a first car for their teen. Let’s take a deeper look at these three categories.

Safety – The Ford Focus comes standard with an airbag system, engine immobilizer, 3-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners, emergency interior trunk release, a tire pressure monitoring system, and ventilated front disc/rear drum brakes.

Reliability – By shopping in the 2009 year and younger, you are setting your teen up with a car that will get them through college. Yahoo estimates that a car from 2009 will have roughly 66,000 miles on it. This will help you get a good deal while still young enough to remain reliable for years to come.

Ease of Use – The interior of the Focus is packed with techy-features that are easy for teens to use while still being hip and up-to-date. By having easy-to-use features, your teen will spend more time with their eyes on the road than messing with interior technologies.

Ford Sends ST Owners to Octane Academy

Octane Academy

2014 Ford Fiesta

Ferrari and Jaguar send buyers of their most exotic racecars to racetrack lessons; what’s the point of owning a Ferrari and not knowing how to tame the beast? These automakers don’t want you making a fool of their cars while you’re out and about, trying to strut your stuff.

Not all of us can afford a Ferrari or a Jaguar, but for driving enthusiasts in the market for a more reasonable sports car, Ford is offering a free day of training at the ST Octane Academy to anyone who buys a Ford Fiesta ST or Focus ST.

Located at Miller Motorsports Park near Park City, Utah, the Octane Academy happens to be one of America’s longest, most lavish racetracks, according to Yahoo Autos. The Miller Motorsports Park opened in 2006 and has been ground zero for Ford driver training, including extreme off-roading.

The training day begins with a classroom session which outlines safety, the track, and an overview of the program. Everyone then heads to their cars and the real fun begins. Drivers practice rotating the cars around cones at 90 and 180-degrees using steering, clutch and handbrake, and even go so far as to practice reverse 180-degree spins.

Next up: an intense timed autocross course where drivers wind and sprint through orange cones, including slalom and figure 8’s.

After lunch, drivers are hooked up to outriggers that raise the car’s tires slightly off the pavement, creating a simulation of driving on ice. It can’t all be fun and games, can it?

The day wraps up with a visit to the East portion of the Miller circuit. Instructors get in the passenger seats and offer invaluable tips over the course of six laps. After that, drivers get wide-open free time to put their new skills to work and push their cars to their limits.

All in a day’s work, right?
