Ford’s Pothole Protection System in Development for 2017 Ford Fusion

potholeOne of the more unfortunate parts of living in a big city is the potholes. Potholes seem to show up on the road all the time. What’s worse is that they can often cause some serious damage to your vehicle! If you’ve ever dreamed of a system that could help you avoid these potholes in the road, Ford has made your dream a reality.

According to a Ford press release, the automaker has developed a pothole protection system for the 2017 Ford Fusion.

Ford’s pothole protection system uses computer-controlled shock absorption to minimize the amount of damage potholes can do to your car.

“The new Fusion V6 Sport substantially reduces the harsh impact potholes often deliver,” says Jason Michener, Ford continuously controlled damping engineering expert. “Our new pothole mitigation technology works by actually detecting potholes and ‘catching’ the car’s wheel before it has a chance to drop all the way into the pothole.”

The 2017 Ford Fusion is just the first vehicle in the Ford lineup to make use of this revolutionary technology. Hopefully, it will spread to other vehicles in the near future in order to help drivers everywhere avoid the constant and irritating potholes on city roads!

Ford Tests Driverless Vehicles in Snowy Conditions

snowy roadSeveral automakers are currently testing driverless technology. However, Ford Motor Company is going above and beyond to test driverless vehicles in a variety of conditions.

One of the biggest questions about driverless cars is how the sensors and cameras will be able to function in snow or other bad weather. Autonomous vehicles use sensors, cameras, radar, and other technology to pinpoint their location, but what will happen when snow covers the cameras and lane markers?

Ford is working to solve that problem by testing a fleet of driverless Fusion Hybrids on a snow-covered, 32-acre, closed-course testing facility in Ann Arbor. Ford has been working with the University of Michigan to develop special 3D maps. These maps will allow the vehicle to precisely understand the road’s signs and markings no matter what the weather.

The 3D maps are created to contain useful information allowing the car to localize, even with snowy conditions. Ford is even hoping to enable the program to recognize when the weather is too rough and stop driving.

Jim McBride, Ford technical leader for autonomous vehicles, said in a statement, “Weather isn’t perfect, and that’s why we’re testing autonomous vehicles in wintry conditions — for the roughly 70% of US residents who live in snowy regions.”

We at Friendly Ford are thankful that we are part of a company that cares about the safety of its customers. Being in Chicago, we know about snow and are excited to see the testing of driverless vehicles in snowy conditions!

How to Find the Best Vehicle for a Young Driver

2016 Ford Focus

2016 Ford Focus

Finally allowing your teen to drive on his or her own can be a nail-biting experience. It’s not that they are incompetent but you can’t control all of the other drivers out there.

One thing that you can do to help is to get them a great car, one that has all of the important features to keep them safe and sound. The best vehicle for a young driver should have the following features.

Mild Horsepower

A lot of horsepower may tempt your teen to test the limits of the vehicle. On the other hand, healthy acceleration is actually essential to safety. In those rare times you need it, it should be there.

No Minicars

Just as you would imagine, cars that are extremely small simply do not perform as well as their larger counter parts.

Safety Ratings

By far the most important feature is safety. Both the IIHS and NHTSA test all of the vehicles on the market. You should look for top-scoring vehicles. In fact, the IIHS compiles a list of the Best Used Vehicle Choices for Teens every year. Check it out here!

Ford Fusion Sales Lead Brand to Good September Numbers

Ford Fusion Sales

2014 Ford Fusion

It’s been quite a year for the Ford Fusion, which just recorded its fifth straight month of record-breaking sales performance in September. The Fusion sold 29,452 vehicles in September alone, a huge percentage of the 137,297 vehicles sold in September for the brand overall. The Fusion wasn’t the only vehicle to perform well, though; the Explorer and Transit Connect also posted great numbers, making up for a lower volume in F-Series trucks while the new F-150 gets prepared.

“Fusion is selling strong, with five straight months of record performance and California driving more than 20 percent of our retail growth this year – more than any other state,” said John Felice, Ford Vice President, US Marketing, Sales and Service. “Lincoln produced its best sales results in seven years with the recent introduction of our all-new Lincoln MKC.”

Come see us at Friendly Ford to check out any of these awesome best-selling vehicles and to keep our streak of great sales going for the rest of 2014!

Business Insider Likes Used Mustang and Fusion for First-Time Drivers

first-time drivers

2013 Ford Fusion

Do you have a newly sixteen-year-old who has been itching for their first car? We understand, as a parent, you are a little nervous (okay, extremely nervous) for your teen to be behind the wheel. According to Business Insider, there are a couple of Ford models that make great cars for first-time drivers!

The 2007-Present Ford Fusion makes a great car because of its reliability, good reputation, and great safety features according to Business Insider. The Fusion offers excellent technologies which will satisfy your new driver. It also offers plenty of space and comfort for when they move for college in a few years. The 2005-Present Ford Mustang is another great choice for first-time drivers according to Business Insider. They like the fact that you can get a sports car with a V6 engine for your teen. The Mustang also received a Good Safety Rating from IIHS showing that it is indeed a safe choice.

Why buy a used car for your teen? First, you can save money by purchasing used which means more money for gas and insurance starting out. Many used vehicles come with great warranties and have a good track record for repairs and maintenance. Some certified used vehicles were previously leases, meaning most (if not all) of the maintenance has been done at a certified dealership. Leased vehicles have a good reputation for being extremely clean and offering low miles.

If you have any questions about purchasing a used vehicle or have a teen at home that just can’t wait to have their new car, stop by Friendly Ford!

Ford’s March Sales

Ford Motor Company had the best March it has seen in eight years! Vehicle sales were up 3% year-over-year and there were 244,167 units sold last month. Ford attributes much of its success to the Fusion and its excellent lineup of F-Series trucks.

Ford's March Sales

Ford F-Series

Through the month, Ford sold a whopping 70,940 trucks which beat out their 70,000 benchmark and was an increase of 5% from last year. It is important to note that the 70,000 benchmark has only been beaten four times; therefore March was an extremely good month for the F-Series. Along with the ability to do some serious work, the F-Series of trucks pack comfort, technology, and reliability making them excellent family vehicles as well.

Ford's March Sales

2014 Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion was sold 32,963 times which was an increase of 9% year-over-year. This car was introduced in 2005, and has since really taken hold of the sedan market. The Fusion offers style, class, and efficiency making it an all-around great vehicle. Many people choose this sedan because of its exceptional interior space and luxurious feel. It’s safe to say that the Fusion was a great addition to the Ford family almost 10 years ago.

If you would like to see why these vehicles lead the way for Ford sales in March, stop by our Chicago area dealership. The team here at Friendly Ford will be happy to assist you in choosing the perfect vehicle to fit your needs!

Ford Drives itself into the Future

Ever thought that we would see a car that drives itself? Technology is getting closer achieving that goal. Ford recently unveiled a self-driving Fusion to compete with other top automakers and Google who are all trying to perfect the self-driving vehicle.

Ford chose to turn the Fusion into a self-driver because the Fusions available on the market currently already feature several driver-assist technologies. The current Fusion has adaptive cruise control and a lane keeping system.

To turn the car into a self-driver, Ford included a forward camera, forward radar, ultrasonic sensors, omnidirectional camera, and added more GPS technologies. It also contains four scanning infrared light sensors (LiDAR) mounted on the roof that allows the self-driving Fusion to track objects surrounding the vehicle.

Currently, researchers are trying to mimic the complex environments that drivers go through on a normal basis. Raj Nair Ford’s group VP explains that “The key is sensor fusion and working through the algorithms.” Nair wants to get the Fusion reacting in real-world situations but in a safe and effective manner.

Although the science and technology of a self-driving vehicle seems very futuristic, we are excited to see where the automobile industry is headed. Could we be able to buy self-driving cars in the next 10 years? 20 years? Let us know what you think about self-driving vehicles in the comment section below!

Ford to Launch 17 New Vehicles in Middle East and Africa

Ford has announced a new plan to launch 17 new or refreshed Ford and Lincoln vehicles over the next 24 months in the Middle East and Africa.

Ford is already experiencing explosive success in the North American and Asian markets, and the brand believes that the Middle East and Africa are collectively “poised to become one of the next big automotive growth markets and we want to be there for these customers with great new cars and trucks.”

The new plan was announced at the 2013 Dubai International Motor Show, where Ford also took the opportunity to debut the Ford Fusion sedan and the EcoSport for the Middle East.

The Fusion is a midsize sedan that delivers an incredible suite of driver-assistance technologies like Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Sport Information System, and Adaptive Cruise Control, but you don’t have to live in the Middle East to enjoy vehicles like it. We’ve already got the latest model right here at Friendly Ford.
